The Vakacoko Vanua model of labour mobility is a community-centered approach by iTaukei Affairs Board integrating traditional social structures and values into the preparation, management, and reintegration of migrant workers. Rooted in vanua, which encompasses land, kinship, and cultural identity, this model integrates collective responsibility and communal support throughout the labour mobility process.
This research has sought to understand the motivations that drive ni-Vanuatu citizens when they make decisions about who to vote for in the lead up to an election.
A second focus of this research has been to investigate why and how those decisions factor gender into the equation. We hoped to find evidence of voters’ perceptions of women as capable political leaders through the interviews and focus group sessions.
The body of research on the social effects of labour mobility on families and communities is becoming more widely acknowledged. The purpose of the Pilot Study is to investigate the effects of labour mobility schemes on social cohesiveness and stability within families and communities, in addition to adding to the body of information regarding labour mobility and its social implications. This study is collaborative research partnership between the Ministry of ITaukei Affairs and Balance of Power.
The research was led by the Tupou Tertiary Institute Research and Training Centre Tonga, with the support from Balance of Power, as part of BOP’s initiative under its Tonga country program. The objective of the research was to explore how Tongan voters perceive women’s engagement in decision-making platforms. This is to gain a deeper comprehension of the authentic predicaments encountered by Tongan women within familial, communal, and nationwide political environments, including the parliament.
