Across Tonga, kava clubs have long been spaces for conversation, connection, and community. In October 2025, Balance of Power (BOP) facilitated a series of Tano‘a ‘a Hina: Ko e Talanoa Fungani sessions with Hofoa and Huolanga Kava Club members, creating safe spaces for men and youth to reflect on leadership and family roles in their communities.
The sessions were guided by trained facilitators with the Women and Children Crisis Centre (WCCC) Tonga. Participants explored what leadership looks like in the home and wider community, how respect and collaboration strengthen relationships, and the importance of creating environments where every voice is valued.
In Hofoa, participants discussed inclusive leadership and the role of youth in contributing to respectful family environments. At Huolanga, conversations focused on “Leading in a Home Free of Violence,” reflecting on shared responsibilities and partnership between men and women in the home.
One participant shared:
“Balance in the home begins when everyone’s contributions are valued; fathers and mothers working together set a positive example for their children.”
These talanoas support BOP’s broader objectives by engaging men in reflection on leadership and shared decision-making, helping shift attitudes on women’s leadership legitimacy and cultivating male advocates. They also align with Tonga’s national priorities, including gender equality, youth engagement, family protection, and community cohesion, using culturally trusted spaces like kava clubs to ensure respectful and meaningful dialogue.
Looking ahead, one more Kava Club meeting will take place in Hofoa, and two more are planned for Kolomotu’a in November 2025. These sessions will continue fostering reflection and new perspectives on leadership, in communities across Tongatapu.
