Outstanding Debator – 2026 Digital Week Debate Competition, Port Vila

Can you tell us a little about yourself and your journey into the school debate competition?

My name is Ozana Rose Jackson, and I come from Tongoa Island in SHEFA Province. I am currently a Year 12 student at Onesua Presbyterian College.

I had participated in debates at school level before, but taking part in a larger competition was a very different experience for me. I was nervous, especially knowing that we would be competing against larger schools.

Winning the competition and receiving the Overall Outstanding Debater award showed me that where you come from does not determine what you can achieve.

How has participating in the debate competition helped you grow in confidence and find your voice?

Debating has helped me become more confident when speaking in front of larger audiences and expressing my opinions and concerns openly.

Having the opportunity to speak about national issues also makes me feel that young people’s views are recognised and that we can be part of important conversations. I have learned that confidence is important and that we should not allow nervousness to stop us from doing our best.

Why is it important for young women to have opportunities to speak and lead?

Women are sometimes not given the same space to speak, particularly when men dominate discussions. When young women take on leadership roles, it helps us build confidence and shows other girls that their voices also matter.

In rural communities, there can still be a perception that men are more capable leaders. I want to show that women can also lead and contribute meaningfully.

What did winning the debate mean to you and your school community?

The win meant a lot because it was not only our achievement. Our teachers, classmates, pastor and families supported us throughout the journey. We spent many hours researching, practising and preparing for the competition.

When the winner was announced, it was an emotional moment because we knew how much hard work had gone into it. It also showed that a remote school can compete and succeed at a high level.

What lessons or key takeaways have you gained from this experience?

I learned that you only get one chance to make a good impression, so you should put forth your best effort. Nervousness can hinder your performance, so confidence is essential. Additionally, having strong support from the school community is vital, it motivates you to achieve your goals and pushes you beyond your limits.

What message would you share with other young people?

Do not let where you come from limit what you believe you can achieve. Debate gives young people important skills, such as confidence, critical thinking, asking questions and communicating their ideas.

Take the opportunities that come your way, work hard and believe that your voice is important.
